aspirin for blood clots in legs
Aspirin vs. Warfarin for Deep Veinte Clothes But experts in the heart say it is not a preferred or ideal choice By Steven ReinbergHealthDay ReporterTUESDAY, August 26, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- it can offer an alternative for people who have had in the deep veins of the legs and cannot tolerate the long-term use of , according to Australian researchers. The condition, called (DVT), can be life-threatening if the clots untie, travel to and block a lung. Patients tend to prescribe painkillers to prevent the formation of clots, researchers said. "Most people who have had a blood vein or an embolism where the clot blocks the flow have treatment, such as warfarin, for at least six months, first to dissolve the clot and then to prevent it from happening again," Chief Investigator Dr said. John Simes, professor of medicine at Sydney University. However, long-term use of warfarin () may be inconvenient, requiring frequent tests and dosage adjustments, he said. The most recent drugs, such as (dabigatran) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban), are effective and do not require frequent blood tests. However, they are expensive, and some patients cannot tolerate them, Simes said. "Moreover, there is a high risk that treatment may cause bleeding in some patients. Consequently, many patients choose not to continue such medications after a period of time," he said. The study, published online Ago 25 in Circulation magazine, shows daily aspirin reduces the risk of another clot without causing undue bleeding, compared to no treatment, Simes explained. Specifically, a daily aspirin reduced the risk of developing blood clots by 42 percent, compared to patients who took an inactive, the researchers found. "This is especially important for patients who cannot take long-term anticoagulant for any reason, such as personal preference, adverse effects of anticoagulant or cost," Simes said. Without thinning the blood, patients who have had a risk of running 10 percent of developing recurrent clots in the first year and 5 percent risk each year later, the researchers say. Dr. Gregg Fonarow, professor of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and spokesman for the American Association, warned that patients should not think that they can change to aspirin based on this study. Continuing"The effect of treatment of aspirin is substantially lower than what has been shown with warfarin or with the new oral blood thinnings," he said. "With these drugs, a reduction of 80 to 90 percent in clots has been shown," Fonarow said. Aspirin is not a proper replacement for these medications, he said. Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, took a more positive stance. "For those people who can't take, aspirin can be a possible alternative," he said. While less effective than other blood thinners, aspirin "at least provides some protection, and in the case of patients with DVT who do not have other options, aspirin provides benefits," she said. For the study, researchers analyzed the results of two trials that included 1,224 patients taking 100 milligrams of aspirin daily for at least two years.
